Martin W. Sudzina

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the death of Martin W. Sudzina, age 68.  He passed peacefully on December 3, 2019. Our family has found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support and prayers we have received from all. They have been heard and appreciated.

Marty was born on November 10, 1951 to the late Edward and Helen (Kovacs) Sudzina.   

He is survived by his son, Gregory J. Sudzina, and sisters, Debra Keane (Mike) and Mari Lynn Klein (Rick).

Per his request, a private interment will be held at Saints Peter and Paul Byzantine Cemetery West Mifflin, PA.

MARTIN SUDZINA – Running 
Considered by many as the greatest long distance runner in Western Pennsylvania, Martin was to be the marathon representative for the United States in the Olympics in Moscow but did not run because of the boycott. He was the Olympic Marathon Alternate for the United States in 1976. He won 38 out of the 56 marathons he entered. In 1975, he won five marathons becoming the only man to win the New York City and Bronx Marathons in the same year. He won 10 relay marathons in 1976 and 1978 and was a 10-time AAU Champion. The later included; 2 marathons, 2 half marathons, 2 10 mile races, a 30 kilometer, 15 kilometer and 10 kilometer races. Martin beat virtually every great runner of his era, including Bill Rogers and Frank Shorter
