Raymond P. Sabol

Raymond Paul Sabol, 86, died peacefully with his wife of 63 years, Helen (Yarosik) Sabol, at his side, Monday, Jan. 26, 2015, in Aiken, S.C. Formerly of North Huntingdon Township, he was born June 28, 1928, in Duquesne, the son of the late Mary (Koresko) and Michael Sabol. Following graduation from Duquesne High School, he enlisted in the Navy, served four years and was honorably discharged. He enlisted in the Naval Reserves and was recalled to serve in the Korean War for two years. Upon discharge, he was employed by Westinghouse - Bettis, where he worked on the reactor for the nuclear-powered submarine, Seawolf. He then transferred to the Westinghouse Nuclear Service Division in Monroeville, where he worked with nuclear plant steam generators in the U.S. and Europe and set up the Snubber Testing Program. He then transferred to the Westinghouse Service Center Division in Spartanburg, S.C., and later to the Savannah River Site where he retired after 40 years with Westinghouse. Following retirement, he worked part-time at the George Funeral Home, Aiken, S.C. While living in North Huntingdon, Ray was a member of St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus, as well as a member of the Norwin Band, Aids where he served as president. While in Aiken, S.C., he was a member and communicant of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he held positions as Faithful Navigator, Assembly No. 1074 and then Grand Knight of Columbus No. 3684. Ray was a passionate fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and for Sunday games, hosted a Steelers Club at the Knights to watch the game with other loyal Steelers fans in South Carolina. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Lawrence (Marie). He is survived by his wife, Helen; his sister, Marian (Ben) Beaudoin; and sister-in-law, Bernadette Sabol. He is the beloved father of Regis Paul (Gail) Sabol, of North Huntingdon, Donna (Gary) Bate, of Augusta, Ga., and Richard Paul (Pennie) Sabol, of Augusta, Ga.; loving grandfather of Lisa (Kevin) Winwood, of North Huntingdon, Ryan Paul Sabol, of Boulder, Colo., Allison (Sam) Hardy, of Augusta, Ga., Keith (Caitlin) Bate, of Atlanta, Ga., Roman Paul Sabol, of Valdosta, Ga., Russell Paul Sabol and Megan Sabol, of Augusta, Ga.; great-granddaughter, Jasie Mae Winwood, of North Huntingdon; also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30 2015, at the WILLIAM S. SKOVRANKO MEMORIAL HOME, 828 Richford St., Duquesne, PA 15110. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, 200 Leger Road, North Huntingdon, PA 15642, followed by interment with military honors at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
